Extreme Microbes

Extremophilic microbes love extreme conditions outside the range of what is suitable for most life: We will get to know microbes, which not only tolerate, but thrive at temperatures up to the boiling point of water and down below its freezing point, at pH values, pressures, salinities, and even radioactivity that destruct most biomolecules and organisms. We will visit the homes of these fascinating organisms, including acidic hot springs, volcanic soils, alkaline soda lakes, salines and the deep sea. We will also get to know everyday environments that we only recognize as “extreme” when taking a closer look. Finally, we will learn about mechanisms of adaption to these extreme environments and explore some of the biotechnological applications.
