Medicinal Chemistry

A multi-diciplinary research field
Foredrag ved Bente Frølund

TORSDAG D. 20. APRIL 2017
UNF Aalborg

Medicinal chemistry is positioned at the intersection of several different disciplines, which includes organic chemistry, computational chemistry, pharmacology.

The challenge for early discovery and development of potential drugs is often the lack of knowledge of the three dimensional structure of the receptor / enzyme. Thus it is difficult rationally to predict the structure of the substance / drug that will elicit the wanted effect and to ensure that the drug does not interact with other receptors / enzymes, causing side effects.

Based on diseases of the retina, which are the major causes of severely impaired vision and blindness in the western world, different medicinal chemical strategies for early discovery, identification and development of treatment options will be elucidated: Is it possible to affect the blood flow involved in the diseases listed above, or create artificial vision by development of drugs that interact with a particular group of receptors in the eye?
